K-Drama Challenge PART 2
β€οΈ Hello Everyone~! β€οΈ
Welcome to this week's newsletter! Hope youβre all doing well~ Thank you for all of the feedback on last weeks newsletter and for all of your questions. This is the part two of our K-drama challenge~! We're going to be working on learning a word/phrase from each drama recommendation from last week! A lot of you sent in questions and I'm so excited to answer them so... without further ado, let's begin! π
A few of you told me that you liked this drama esp. because of the foreign representation! I'm glad you enjoyed it, let's learn this phrase now! π₯
This phrase is based primarily on the word "κ°λΉ (gam-dang)." This is defintely a hard one to translate or just learn so I'm so glad for this question! There isn't really a direct translation for this so I want to teach you the phrases and context!
First of all: The word κ°λΉ on it's own translates to "handle." Let's look at a few phrases that use this word:
κ°λΉ λΌ? (gam-dang-dwe?)
κ°λΉν μ μκ² μ΄? (gam-dang hal su it-sseo?)
κ°λΉ λͺ» ν΄. (gam-dang-mot-hae)
So the first two phrases using this word mean "Can you handle it?" or "You think you can handle it?" Both can be used in a genuine way like asking someone if you think they can handle something BUT as always, you can also use it in a snarky way. π The way that the character in this drama used itβit was in a way to challenge the other girl. π₯ She said "κ°λΉν μ μλ μ κ° μλμΌ" which means, "he's not someone that you can handle." The last one I've listed means "I can't handle it" which means exactly what it says! You can't handle something because it's too hard/you're too overwhelmed.
Hope that helped!!! & take a look at the clip below to hear it spoken (0:47~) π
2. "κ±±μ νμμ" - Romance is a Bonus Book π
I heard that a few of you really liked this for the romance~! Me too and honestly writing this newsletter makes me want to rewatch it again hehe π
Let's learn what this phrase means! It's definitely easier than the previous one but nevertheless I think this is an essential phrase for all of the newer Korean learners. For this one, let me break it down:
κ±±μ : concern, worry
ν: comes from ν΄ (to do)
μμ: ~μμ is a common world ending which means "as you know or you know"
This phrase "κ±±μ νμμ" translates to "I was worried!" But there is another layer that usually isn't translated by subtitles. The phrase does mean that the person was worried but the ending turns it from "I was worried" to "I was worried you know!" π’
Hope that makes sense~ Take a look at the scene below at (7:10~) β€οΈ
3. "μ΅μλ‘" - The Good Bad Mother π€§
We talked about this but some of the characters in this drama speak in a different dialect! Which is why for this drama, I'm glad to be teaching you μ¬ν¬λ¦¬ (a different dialect word) β€οΈ
This word is from Gyeongsang Province and is used by people who speak the dialect from this province! I realize most of you haven't really learned much of these words because most Korean is taught using the Seoul dialect! Let's learn what this means~ π
μ΅μλ‘ (ok-su-roh) -- same as "λ무" or "맀μ°" (no-mu or mae-oo)
This word is the same as λ무 which means "very" or "really." You wouldn't use the word on its own you would use it attached to another word. For example "μ΅μλ‘ μ’λ€" which means "really good!" π₯
Next time you meet your friend from Gyeongsang or even a Korean friend in general, try using this new word! They will probably be so shocked that you know μ¬ν¬λ¦¬ hehe!
Take a look at the clip below to see the pronounciation (1:02~) β€οΈ
