01. Saying "Happy New Year" in Korean?!
This is a question that a few of you had so I'm happy to explain! The Korean way of saying Happy New Year isn't necessarily a direct translation so I think it would be good to break it down! β€οΈ
μν΄ λ³΅ λ§μ΄ λ°μΌμΈμ! (sae-hae bok man-he bad-eu-sae-yo)
Let's break it down!
μν΄: new year
볡: luck
λ§μ΄: alot, many
λ°μΌμΈμ: recieve (formal way)
This phrase that we say during new years translates to, "recieve a lot of luck in this new year!" And it is what you would say in formal settings to say happy new year! The informal way of saying this would be: μν΄ λ³΅ λ§μ΄ λ°μ (saehae bok mani bada) ! So if you're saying it to your friends use this one~ β
02. New Years Traditions in Korea π²
It's important to understand that of course we celebrate January 1st as the start of a new year but Lunar New Year or (μ€λ ) is more traditionally celebrated as the start of the new year and there are much more traditions associated with that holiday! β
That being said tho, there is a tradition that Korean families will do during new years and that is: eating ricecake soup! or λ‘κ΅!!!
This tradition originates from the original Korean age system where everyone turns a year older on January 1st! Even though there is no official Korean age anymore, people still use it for the most part. Drinking/eating ricecake soup on January 1st symbolizes eating another year and turning a year older!
So if you want to celebrate new years like a Korean, try making this soup!
