HAPPY DECEMBER everyone!! I can't believe how fast this year has flown by! It's already the end of my third year with TEUIDA :) I hope you've all enjoyed the newsletters + that I can continue teaching you new things every week!
Let's get right into this week's issue of Teugether! βΊοΈ
What's the news in Korea this week?! π°π·
Y'all I don't know how much of this is being broadcast to people outside of Korea we had the most intense snow of the CENTURY in November this past week. π
It was honestly so crazy, and I didn't want to leave my house at all but I couldn't help it because it was SO PRETTY After the snow happened, I read that it was the first snow of its sort since 1907 !!!! βοΈ
Another amazing thing that came out of the snow was this meme of this man SKIING TO WORK because the traffic was so bad. I laughed so hard and I NEEDED to share it with you all too! π
This man has been going viral in Korea for his hilarious (yet practical) choice of commute!
(you can't tell me this isn't genius π)
Korean Slang of the Week π°π·
Korean Text Slang
"γ·γ·"
(λλ)
This text slang is just a shortened or simplified version of saying something! In this case, if someone uses "γ·γ·" in a text to you, they're basically expressing shock/fear/amazement. But the literal meaning of it is different!
γ·γ· = λλ which is the mimetic word for "shivering"
Since the text is like shivering, it means shivering out of fear/amazement/shock!
If your friend says something shocking just reply with γ·γ· !!! Try it out!
This was such an interesting question and it sent me down a WORMHOLE of trying to find out the exact reason. I had a feeling I knew but I wanted to make sure that I was giving y'all the right info.
First of all, the tradition of stamping your name as a μΈκ°λμ₯ (identity stamp) came from China a very long time ago! In China, the color red is seen as representing prosperity and happiness! This is why people stamp their official seals in red because we usually use them for contracts or important things π
Writing your name in red, however, is a superstition that has been around for a while and has three possible origins. The superstition is that if you write your name in red, then you will die. These are the three origins:
1. It looks like blood (the red color) π΄
2. There is a story that a long time ago, there was an emporer who liked writing his name in red because it was an auspicious color - but if commoners did it he would have them killed πͺ
3. The names of the dead during the Korean War were marked in red ποΈ
