Welcome to this week's newsletter! Hope youβre all doing well and learning lots of Korean and Japanese from Teuida~ I got a lot of requests from you all to do another AMA (Ask me Anything) and honestly, Iβm surprised that you guys arenβt tired of these yet! Haha after this one, I will start doing some more topics like before
but since so many of you sent in questions, I must answer!!! π
Also some of you pointed out last week that the Korean Age is not meant to be used starting 2023. Yes, officially we are getting rid of the Korean age sometime in the next year but I assure you it will take YEARS for people to actually implement this into daily life LOL. π€£ Our ages have always been like this and itβs not just going to take one announcement for us to stop using the Korean age! Although officially it is βnot usedβ people are still using the Korean age socially so it is still very relevant!
Just wanted to point this out~ π
Anyways now that weβve gotten that out of the way, letβs get right into it!
Hope you guys enjoy this week's newsletter and that
youβre able to learn something new! β€οΈπ
1. Can you teach us Korean from K-pop Lyrics? β€οΈ
Of course!!! Weβre doing a Black Pink lyric because Iβm sure you guys know already that I love them & Iβm still not over the Coachella performance and still watching it on LOOP. Anyways, letβs learn what this lyric means!
μ, μ€λ λ°€μ΄μΌ, λ λ μ νμ κ½ λ€ νΌμ λΉΌμμ λ€μ, look what you made us do μ²μ²ν λ μ μ¬μΈ fire μμΈν λ§νΌ μλ¦λ€μ (jan-in-hal man-keum ah-reum-da-wo)
Letβs break it down!
μμΈν΄: Cruel λ§νΌ: As much μλ¦λ€μ: Beautiful
This sentence means, βItβs so beautiful, that itβs cruelβ The level of beauty is so high that it is actually cruel. Itβs a super powerful lyric and you probably wouldnβt use this on a daily basis BUT it also has some vocabulary that will be useful for you guys !
2. Can you teach us about the different types of Korean public transportation? π
Of course! I did talk about this in a previous newsletter but I will break it down for you guys here since it was so long ago!
For an overview we have three basic modes of transportation for everyday:
And if you are traveling a longer distance there are two more: π Express Bus (κ³ μλ²μ€) - (go-seok buh-sseu) π Train (κΈ°μ°¨) - (gi-cha)
λ²μ€ and μ§νμ² are probably the most affordable ways to get around in Seoul, most people will go to work with these two methods! β€οΈ
As for νμ you can just hail one off of the street or you can call one! There are so many apps but the one that seems to be the most popular (especially for travelers) seems to be Kakao Taxi! π
If you want to ride a κ³ μλ²μ€ you canβt use the same card as the one used for regular buses/subways, you need to purchase a separate ticket! π You can do this online and the app is in english!
Last but definitely not least, is the κΈ°μ°¨! These are the long distance trains that we ride in Korea and among these is the famous KTX or bullet train β one of my personal favorite means of travel! π
Hope this was helpful!:)
3. Is it true that in South Korea there is no "Prom" in high schools? π€―
Yes, unfortunately we donβt have prom in Korean schools:( A lot of my Korean friends are actually so jealous that I got to have a prom (since I went to an international school in Korea) so they always ask me a lot of questions about the Prom that I had and the process of getting ready and doing promposals and stuff.
Maybe one day there will be but no itβs not a thing here! TBH seniors in Korea are really busy preparing for the college entrance exam and it is the biggest and most important year so thatβs kind of where all their focus is. π€
3. Can you tell us an underrated Korean food? π₯
Guys. Let me put you on to the BEST dish if you guys like seafood. Itβs called μλ κ²μ₯ (seasoned raw crab). It is literally the best thing on the planet and I really really enjoy having it with rice and honestly even on its own! Iβve been seeing it on tiktok a lot more recently so hopefully it is available wherever you guys are!
It is also pretty easy to make as long as you have some flash frozen crab (the ones that are okay to have raw) so I will link a recipe below!
What do you want to hear about? π AMA!
Before ending this newsletter, I'd like to hear from you guys what you'd like to read about in these weekly newsletters! Since everyone has different requests for the newsletter, I've decided to create this form to keep track of them all π Please fill this out if you'd like to hear about something specific β€οΈ
Send me questions that you want me to answer in the next newsletter !!!
