❤️ Hello Everyone~! ❤️

Hope you’re all having a great week :) I had a great weekend because I got to finish all my final exams and finally go to a concert I’ve been looking forward to hehe!

I got to see Zion T and Car the Garden and even Hynn! It was such a great concert! Speaking of concerts and artists, I got a lot of requests from you guys to do more lessons with K-pop lyrics and translate them for you! Since it’s been a while since we’ve done one of these, I decided to make this week’s newsletter K-pop themed!!!

Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

1. Love Untold - HYUNJIN (Stray Kids) 😎

One of you requested this song saying that the translations were inconsistent for different versions so I decided to pick this one for the week! You were right, they are inconsistent but also I was able to find some things that were mistranslated! 🤔

So let’s look at the chorus:

날 사랑하는 사람 그 앞에서
널 사랑한단 말도 다 못해서
주저앉고 싶지 않아 어떡해 난 ye ye ye ye ye👈

널 사랑하는 사람이 되고서
날 사랑하는 내가 되고 있어서
울지 않아 너가 아플까 봐 더는 ye ye ye ye ye 👈

Here is the translation that I found online:

In front of the person who loves me
I couldn't even say that I love you
I don't want to sit around, what should I do? 👈
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Being someone who loves you
I'm becoming the one who loves me
I won't cry anymore but I'm afraid you'll get sick👈
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

We’re going to be specifically looking at the two highlighted phrases: ❤️

1. 주저앉고 싶지 않아 (ju-jeo-an-go ship-ji ahn-ah)

주저앉고: to flop down into your seat
싶지 않아: I don’t want to

So this is translated very literally to “I don’t want to sit around” BUT it has a metaphorical meaning. It basically means “I don’t want to give up” which is actually

what the lyrics are meant to be saying.

The actual translation would be “I don’t want to give up, but what can I do?” 😢

2. 울지 않아 너가 아플까 봐 (ool-ji-anh-ah neo-ga-ah-ppul-ga bwa)

울지 않아: I don’t cry
너가 아플까 봐: because you might get hurt, you might get sick

This lyric is translated to “I won’t cry anymore but I’m afraid you’ll get sick.” This translation is just completely wrong because it translates pain/hurt to being sick. While it is correct, it isn’t what it means contextually.

So, the accurate translation for this one would be “I don’t cry because I’m afraid you’ll be hurt.” Implying that him crying would hurt her. 😭

2. Kitsch - IVE 😎

I wanted to do this song because I think the lyrics are honestly genius and so savage! I hope you guys can agree with me and learn the meanings behind the song as well! Let’s look at the first lyric and break it down.

우린 달라, 특별한 게 좋아
Oh, what a good time
난 잘 살아, 내 걱정은 낭비야
니가 보낸 DM을 읽고 나서
답이 없는 게 내 답이야
(That's my style)

Let's break it down!! ❤️

1. 난 잘 살아, 내 걱정은 낭비야

난 잘 살아: I’m living well/I’m doing well
내 걱정: worrying about me
낭비야: is a waste (of time,of energy etc.)

So! The first one is probably easy, it just means I’m living well or I’m doing well. Then it says “worrying about me is a waste of time.” As in, don’t waste your time being concerned about me and my life, it’s a waste of your time/energy.

The word 낭비 is a good one to learn for Korean learners because you can just slap a word in front of it and it can be something different. For example:

시간 낭비: waste of time
돈 낭비: waste of money

Does that make sense?? Hope it did! ❤️

I don’t want to overwhelm you guys with too much Korean and too much information so I will wrap it up here hehe! 😀 I hope this longer newsletter that analyzes the lyrics/translations more deeply was helpful for you guys and I’ll make sure to do more in the future!
