I've been doing super well after getting back from my vacation and I've been super eager to answer all of your questions 😁 I've gotten so many after last weeks AMA so I decided to do an AMA. Just a disclaimer, for the past couple of weeks we've been going over some more serious topics (names/culture etc.) ❤️ It's new for me so let me know if you guys are liking it. 1. Got a TON of replies on the Korean name thing!

So I've decided to answer them briefly in this section :) Again, this is my genuine advice & I've cross-checked these answers with other Korean friends

1. As you stated last time most people don’t think it’s rude to give yourself a Korean name as long as it’s not something done just as a fashion, what about choosing a name with a similar meaning to the one already given to us even if they don’t sound similar? ❤️

Thank you so much for your question! Yes, this is also a great way! Again, I really think it is about the reason for needing a Korean name (as I mentioned last week). 😃

But make sure that if you are doing this you run it by a Korean or Korean person if you can and make sure that translation is okay! For example if your english name is Sky making your Korean name 하늘 makes sense because it is a common name 😃 But you can probably guess that not everything translates so easy/well hehe.

As always, just make sure we're being culturally aware and not appropriating because Korean names are cultural at the end of the day & quite a big thing.

2. In K-dramas they often have an English name besides their Korean name when they live abroad, even registered in their passport, and sometimes some characters have it like a nickname. Such name doesn't feel related to their Korean names, but more like names they chose because they like it. As a foreigner, I think it's cute. But then why choosing a Korean name not related to your name would feel weird? Is it because is only a kdrama thing and most Koreans also think giving yourself an English name not related to your name is weird? 😕

Hello! Thank you for your question, I spent a while talking about this with my friends and I think I've come up with the best explanation I can ❤️

Firstly, Korean people with English names in their passports are super rare. Normally, they'd just have the romanization of their Korean name (ex. 김준환 would be Kim Jun Hwan) To add any English, you need documentation that you lived abroad with that name (ex. Amerian passport for a dual citizen). Korean people can't just register an English name, so yes-- dramas are unrealistic haha 🤣

As for names not being related, this is a super complex issue that many of the you actually pointed out! It is that a lot of people in the west will not even make an effort to pronounce Asian/ethnic names correctly. The root of why people choose names like Jessica/Amanda/etc. is because our ethnic names are not considered cool/pretty whereas, even in Korea, other names are seen as really cool. 😎

Here is a testimony from my friend: When I moved abroad, my teachers told me that my Korean name was too hard to pronounce so they forcibly gave me an English name. I still use it now but looking back I wish I didn't :(

Other people will give themselves an English name when they are learning English (Just like many of you with Korean). But using it as a fashion, Ex. Someone who is into American music just giving themselves an English name for no reason (catch my drift 😉) would be considered weird here too. Dramas are not always so realistic when it comes to things like this so thank you for your question!

2. In dramas I’ve often seen people refer to non-family members by familial titles, like auntie or mom. What are the rules for this? 🤯

Great question! 이모 is basically the Korean equivalent to calling someone Auntie! It is pretty common in other Asian cultures as well. You can use this to refer to someone working at a restaurant who is an older lady. If you want to be safe though, just use 사장님 (owner). 🍴

As for mom, I'm guessing you mean 어머니 because people wouldn't call someone else's mom 엄마, but they would call them mother. This is commonly used when talking to a friends mom or someone close to you's mom! If you're not close and want to be respectful you would use 어머님. 😃

3. Would love to hear the translated lyrics of ‘Eve, Psyche and The Bluebeards Wife’ by Le Sserafim. Maybe even give it a shot at why it was named that? 😎

I love this song but I had NO IDEA that it had such an interesting name! Let's learn a short phrase (this newsletter is getting so long).

보지 말람 보고 파날 둘러싼 이 금기들 yeah그날의 이브처럼Take it on the chain, I know I like that

Let's break it down~!

1. 보지 말람 (shortened version of 보지 말라면)

보지 말라면 means "if you/someone tells me not to look"

2. 보고 파 (same meaning as 보고싶다)

Means "I want to see" or can even mean I miss you!

So this phrase basically means "If you say I can't look, I want to look even more" 🤯 Does that make sense?

As for the song title, the lyrics above and another english lyric which says "I wish for what's forbidden" gave me a clue into the meaning! ❤️ The meaning of the song is kind of talking about wanting what you can't have/wishing for what is forbidden. The title has three people who wished for what was forbidden.

Eve: told not to eat apple, ate apple
Psyche: fell in love with a god (as a mortal)
Bluebeards wife: told not to open one door, opened that door

They were all overcome with desire and wished for what was forbidden which is the theme of this song! 🤯 The meaning is so deep.
