01. I learned some words like μ¬κ³Ό, κ³ΌμΌ, κ·€, λΈκΈ°β¦ and then, I was watching my series like always and I heard βμ¬κ³Όν΄μβ. I was like βdoing apple ?β
"I looove learning WHY we use a certain word for a certain situation, so I was wondering why we use βappleβ to make the verb βim sorryβ ππ
I LOVE this question because it just goes to show how confusing the Korean language can be (honestly I get it- but when you get it it is 100% percent more satisfying). BASICALLY, the Korean word μ¬κ³Ό has 2 different meanings!
1. Apology
2. Apple!
Of course this is the case in many languages and since you asked, I thought it would be helpful to go over some other examples of this!
λ°° - Pear , Boat , Stomach
μ°¨ - Car, Tea
μ΄ - Ten , Fever
OkayI feel like that might be enough for today so your heads don't explode but let me know if you want a newsletter on homonyms (there are so many) π€£
*Also look at this cute drawing (someone giving an apple aka an apology)
02. I was wondering how/when MBTI got so popular in Korea, and why you think that is? I've noticed a lot of people will ask each other about their MBTI types even when they don't know each other very well. π
Honestly great question & while MBTI got popular quite a while ago (probably like 2019/2020) It is STILL so relevant today.
Before MBTI became a thing, Korean people were obsessed with blood types (if you want a refresher on blood types check out our old newsletter about it) BUT basically, people believed that your blood type said something about your personality. π I know it might sound a little crazy to some of you but now, bloodtypes are becoming much less common!
As I said before, MBTI's came into the picture around 2019/2020 in Korea and it soon became a trend. I personally think it is because of the fact that we love grouping each other up BUT it is also a really easy way to break the ice.
In my opinion, small talk is a lot harder in the Korean language and Korean culture in general. I checked this point with my friends to make sure but I think MBTI is just an easy way to break the ice and feel connected to a stranger/friend you want to get to know!
Also, we as a country are so obsessed with making quizzes and figuring out what type of _______ we are. It's kind of buzzfeed 2012 vibes but much cuter, we can do a newsletter on these quizzes next time - LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT ONE!
03. Could you explain the meaning of D day in Korea? All I think about whenever I hear this phrase is the WW2 battle of Normandy. π₯
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION, thank you for asking this
First of all, I had NO idea that this was a Korean thing so I looked up the origins and it seems like it did originate from the military -- It was a term used to say "the day on which a military operation begins" BUT Koreans use this on a regular basis so let's learn about it!
D-DAY is a term used to describe an important day. A lot of people will use this for an exam or a test (even something like a driving test or the Korean SAT. And people will count down the days to their event by saying D-40, D-39... etc.
It is also kind of used humourously. For example, if a friend is going to ask their crush out or something you could ask them "Is today D-day?" μ€λμ΄ λλ°μ΄μΌ? It is just a term that represents great anticipation and has nothing to do with the battle of normandy (although now that I know it's just a Korean thing I completely get why you'd think that hahaha)
Hope that helped~!
