Korean slangggggg part 2~~~~~
Hello Everyone~! β€οΈ
Hope you're all doing super well and staying motivated on your Korean learning journey~!!! Teuida is back again this week with another newsletter~~ You guys had so much good feedback for the last one
so we will be doing a PART 2 on Korean Slang~~!!! For those of you who are new (we just updated our list) feel free to leave any comments/requests for what you'd like to learn at the bottom & hope you enjoy!
β€οΈ From. Sherly
01. λμ¬λ²½ (neom-sa-byeok)
This is definitely a more niche slang (but still very commonly used) and I think you guys would have fun learning it! SOOOO let's break it down:
λμ¬λ²½ is a slang that means λμμ μλ λ²½ (the wall that cannot be climbed/overcome) ποΈ
If you have already guessed, it's english translation would be "way out of my league" or "impossible to do" -- the term is usually used in the former way (out of my league) and is used to describe a person. π
For example:
If your best friend has a crush on someone who is really pretty and is known for being nice/pretty/the full package. (let's say her name is Sarah). You could say
"μ~ sarahκ° λμ¬λ²½μ΄μ§" (ah~ sarah is neom-sa-byeok aka "she's outta your league) OFC this is just a slang and is not meant to be used in a mean way so DON'T BE MEAN TO EACH OTHER & use wisely~!!!! π
P.S. it can technically be used as not just "out of your league" and can be used as like something that can't be overcome (something that is just the best)
02. λ Έλ΅ (no-dap)
I'm SURE you guys have heard this one before but I'd love to teach you how it's used and what it means~ Let's break it down:
λ Έλ΅
λ Έ: means no (borrowed word from English)
λ΅: means "answer"
Seems fairly simple right?! This slang word is used to describe a situation which has NO answer/no solution. For example, if your friend gets mad at you for something you didn't even do, and you're telling a third person about this. They might just say
"μ μ§μ§ λ Έλ΅μ΄λ€" which means "woah, there's really no answer" It's commonly used for situations that are so unbelievable/stupid that you genuinely cannot come up with a response for it.
USE THIS TERM WISELY
& TRUST me people are going to think you're Korean
03. κ°μ§ λλ€ (gan-ji nan-da)
We've done this one before but because we have so many new readers this week, I thought it would be good to go over it~
Let's break it down:
κ°μ§: derived from the Japanese word for 'style' 'atmosphere' means "cool in Korean"
~λλ€: to appear, to come out
The phrase "κ°μ§ λλ€" means you look really cool, or they look really cool, or this looks really cool. Basically think of it like "swag" haha because it is the same vibe! πΆοΈ
People will often say this when their friend looks unexpectedly good one day or if they're looking at a celebrity too! π
Example sentence: "μΌ! λ μ§μ§ κ°μ§ λλ€" - "Yo, you look really cool!"
04. Question of the week~
We will be adding a new segment called question of the week so I don't have to wait for an AMA to answer your questions! Feel free to leave anything below (nothing is too silly i promise!)
"Maybe Iβm wrong and Iβm not sure youβve heard of it but BTS ARMY has this meme going around because Namjoon once told Jimin βJimin, you got no Jamβ - is that THIS λ ΈμΌ and it was actually Korean slang all along??π"
YES! You are correct. I love it when you guys use our lessons in real life and apply them to your own interests! Yes, RM was saying that Jimin was no-jam because he is not funny/no fun!
Heres a video for those of you who want to keep up hehe
