Hope youโre all having a great week and had a great weekend! I got to go to the Daegu Hiphop festival this past weekend and saw all my favorite artists hehe so Iโm super happy. You guys seemed to really like last week's Kpop newsletter and one of you gave me a great idea to translate and teach Korean from a drama! Since this
Korean is probably a lot more of the everyday phrases that are useful
(unlike most song lyrics) I think itโll really help you guys:)
So letโs learn 3 new Korean phrases from K-drama scenes!
Hope you guys enjoy this week's newsletter and that
youโre able to learn something new! โค๏ธ๐
1. ๋ฉ์ง๋ค ์ฐ์ง์! ๐
First, take a look at this ICONIC scene that probably got Song HyeGyo that best actress award this year! โค๏ธ ๐
This phrase, although in this context is used sarcastically, is used to tell someone that they are cool! Iโm sure you guys have heard of the phrase: ๋ฉ์์ด which means cool. Letโs break this phrase down! ๐
๋ฉ: cool, nice splendid
๋ฉ์ ธ is used to describe something that is cool, nice, splendid
And if you conjugate it it becomes: ๋ฉ์ง๋ค!
You can also say ๋ฉ์๋ค! They are both interchangeable~ Next time you go shopping with a friend and they try something on that looks cool you can say โ๋ฉ์ง๋ค!โ
Iโm sure this is a phrase you guys will use often if you add it to your vocabulary!
2. ์์์ ๋ฒ๋ฆฌ๋ฉด ๋ฒ๋ฐ์ง ๐ฅ
Take a look at the clip from one of my all time FAVORITE dramas!!! If you guys like Mr. Sunshine youโll know that a lot of the Korean used is different from other dramas (because it is historical) But not this particular phrase! ๐คฃ
So this is a phrase that is used on a daily basis and basically means โIf you throw away food youโll get punished.โ Which basically implies you shouldnโt be wasting perfectly good food so finish your food! Letโs break it down! ๐
์์: food
๋ฒ๋ฆฌ๋ฉด: throw away
๋ฒ: punishment
๋ฐ์ง/๋ฐ์: get
Hopefully the breakdown makes it make sense! But this is also connected to a popular Korean saying (usually said to kids). Youโll end up having to eat all of the food that you wasted or threw away in your lifetime in the afterlife. People will say this to kids so that they donโt waste their food! โค๏ธ
Next time, when your friend is wasting food you can tell them this phrase! ๐
2. ๊น์ง์ด์ผ! ๐คฏ
This drama is popping right now! Check out the clip below ๐
So this is the easiest phrase here! And Iโm sure all of you have heard this phrase so many times. Especially if you like watching dramas or variety shows! This phrase ๊น์ง์ด์ผ means โyou shocked me, or you surprised me!โ Letโs break it down ๐
๊น์ง: surprise, shock
์ด์ผ: it is
So it literally translates to โit is a surprise/shockโ but the phrase just stands alone and is a super common phrase. Next time someone shocks you or creeps up on you you can say โ๊น์ง์ด์ผ!!!โ ๐คฏ
I swear this will make you sound like a real native speaker hehe~ โค๏ธ
I donโt want to overwhelm you guys with too much Korean and too much information so I will wrap it up here hehe! ๐ As always, donโt forget to log in to teuida and do your lesson of the day and donโt give up on your Korean journey!! โค๏ธ
(Also the dramas above are: 1. The Glory / 2. Mr. Sunshine / 3. Dr. Cha)
Have a great week everyone!!! ๐
