K-drama Korean Lesson <3

❤️ Hello Everyone~! ❤️

Hope you’re all having a great week and had a great weekend! I got to go to the Daegu Hiphop festival this past weekend and saw all my favorite artists hehe so I’m super happy. You guys seemed to really like last week's Kpop newsletter and one of you gave me a great idea to translate and teach Korean from a drama! Since this

Korean is probably a lot more of the everyday phrases that are useful

(unlike most song lyrics) I think it’ll really help you guys:)

So let’s learn 3 new Korean phrases from K-drama scenes!

1. 멋지다 연진아! 😎

First, take a look at this ICONIC scene that probably got Song HyeGyo that best actress award this year! ❤️ 👇

This phrase, although in this context is used sarcastically, is used to tell someone that they are cool! I’m sure you guys have heard of the phrase: 멋있어 which means cool. Let’s break this phrase down! 😀

멋: cool, nice splendid
멋져 is used to describe something that is cool, nice, splendid
And if you conjugate it it becomes: 멋지다!

You can also say 멋있다! They are both interchangeable~ Next time you go shopping with a friend and they try something on that looks cool you can say “멋지다!”

I’m sure this is a phrase you guys will use often if you add it to your vocabulary!

2. 음식을 버리면 벌받지 🥘

Take a look at the clip from one of my all time FAVORITE dramas!!! If you guys like Mr. Sunshine you’ll know that a lot of the Korean used is different from other dramas (because it is historical) But not this particular phrase! 🤣

So this is a phrase that is used on a daily basis and basically means “If you throw away food you’ll get punished.” Which basically implies you shouldn’t be wasting perfectly good food so finish your food! Let’s break it down! 😎

음식: food
버리면: throw away
벌: punishment
받지/받아: get

Hopefully the breakdown makes it make sense! But this is also connected to a popular Korean saying (usually said to kids). You’ll end up having to eat all of the food that you wasted or threw away in your lifetime in the afterlife. People will say this to kids so that they don’t waste their food! ❤️

Next time, when your friend is wasting food you can tell them this phrase! 😅

2. 깜짝이야! 🤯

This drama is popping right now! Check out the clip below 👇

So this is the easiest phrase here! And I’m sure all of you have heard this phrase so many times. Especially if you like watching dramas or variety shows! This phrase 깜짝이야 means “you shocked me, or you surprised me!” Let’s break it down 😎

깜짝: surprise, shock
이야: it is

So it literally translates to “it is a surprise/shock” but the phrase just stands alone and is a super common phrase. Next time someone shocks you or creeps up on you you can say “깜짝이야!!!” 🤯

I swear this will make you sound like a real native speaker hehe~ ❤️
