Hope you're all having a good week so far!! And I hope you're ready to learn some more Korean hehehe~ Can you guys believe it's almost the end of March... this month has FLOWN by and the weather is finally getting warmer here! What's the weather like where you are?!!?!
Let's get right into this week's issue of Teugether! ☺️
What's trending in Korea this week?! 🇰🇷
This isn't a HUGE trend but it is something that went viral recently in Korea and I wanted to share (because it shows how serious we are about food over here~) 🥘
Have you guys ever tried the food "돈까스 (Donkatsu)?!" Well, it is originally a Japanese dish but similarly to Jjajangmyeon it's taken on a different style in Korea!
There is always a debate over whether or not you pour sauce on it or just dip (the same discussion exists with pretty much every fried food because they get soggy!
Pouring sauce: 부먹 (bu-meok)
Dipping sauce: 찍먹 (jjik-meok)
BUT there has been a new development! People are starting to pour the sauce on it AND THEN flipping it over so the top stays crispy while the bottom has sauce on it! ❤️
This is called: "돈까스 뒤집어서 먹기" (Flipping over the Donkatsu then eating it)
I think this is a super smart idea and I will DEFINITELY be using it from now on! But also I think it's so funny when things like this trend because it just shows HOW serious Koreans take food! (we really really don't play about food) 😅
CHECK OUT HOW TO DO IT!
Korean Slang of the Week 🇰🇷
"칼퇴"
(kal-twe)
This slang is SO commonly used and if you use it I promise people are going to start asking you if you're a native Korean speaker hahah 😁
Let's break it down:
칼 (kal): Knife
퇴 (twe): short for 퇴근 which means "to get off of work"
This slang means to get off of work at EXACTLY the time that you're meant to. If you all know anything about Korean work culture you'd know that it's not as common to get off work exactly at 6pm/7pm and lots of people work overtime on the regular... SOOOO when you say you have to 칼퇴 you mean you're packed up at 5:59 and leaving as soon as the clock turns to 6:00. 😆
MY FAVORITE KOREAN DESSERT I LOOOVE this question hehehe
I have a favorite one and I'm sure some of you haven't heard of it yet... It's called Yakgwa (약과)!!! Yakgwa is a Korean traditional dessert that has recently made a comeback and has become super super popular again!! Its a dessert which is super sweet and fried! I'd really recommend it to anyone who likes sweets and even if you don't -- it's worth a try! ❤️
