Korean Slang!
โค๏ธ Hello Everyone~! โค๏ธ
Hope everyone is doing well and learning lots of Korean. This week, Iโm back with another newsletter kind of related to new years ๐ What can I say, thereโs just so much to talk about. Some of you guys asked about Korean traditions so I thought Iโd explain some new yearโs traditions along with some motivations for this year!!!
There will also be a slang lesson at the end of the newsletter so stay tuned yโall! ๐
1. ์ธ๋ฑ๋ (Se-bet-don) ๐ค
Okay so this is definitely a tradition that other countries have as well, but during Lunar New Year in Korea kids or younger generations get allowance money from their elders. In other cultures such as Chinese culture they have the red envelope but in Korea we donโt really have any specific color associated with the tradition!
However, we do have envelopes sold in stores which are specifically made for money! Take a look at this picture below :)
2. ์ธ๋ฐฐ (Se-beh) ๐โโ๏ธ
Now this is important because it is the way that you get the allowance money we just talked about. On New Years, younger people will bow to their elders usually wearing Hanbok and they say โ์ํด ๋ณต ๋ง์ด ๋ฐ์ผ์ธ์ (Sae-hae bok man-i bad-eu-se-yo)โ
Do you guys remember what this means?! We talked about it two weeks ago~
If you guessed happy new year then you are right hehe โค๏ธ After this, the elders will usually give some words of blessing for the new year and also give allowance to the younger ones!
3. ์ท๋์ด Yut-nori / ํํฌ Hwa-tu ๐ฒ
This is one of the most fun traditions of new years (in my opinion)! Itโs the games~ As for these games, they arenโt only played on new year but also during Chuseok which is the harvest festival. So, remember that these are not only associated with the new year!
The first game, Yut-nori is a traditional board game for all ages! The second one is called Hwa-tu and it is a fishing card game. It sounds a little funny but it is super fun and can even get a little heated. Watch the videos below to learn more about these games!
Now for some motivation! A lot of you said that you wanted this newsletter to be more motivational for the new year so I just wanted to give you guys some advice for learning Korean this year!! โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
1. Find a community or a couple of friends who want to learn Korean as well. Having people around you with similar interests is super important when you want to get motivated. If youโd like to join our Discord server to meet other Korean learners, do so through the link on our instagram :)
2. Second, focus on only a couple of resources. Itโs human nature to want to do anything and everything but I assure you that you will get burnt out and tired from that. Pick a couple of good resources ex. TTMIK and Teuida and focus your attention and master those :) Having too much on your plate will just make you overwhelmed!
3. Lastly, and MOST importantly, have fun with what youโre doing! This is one of the reasons why Teuida makes our content fun while also being educational but people learn better when they are entertained! This is a fact! Make sure youโre having fun and not just trying to be a memorizing robot lol you got this!!!!
Teuida is going to help you get motivated to learn Korean this 2023. For those who learn with us everyday, you can even win some prizes and rewards:)
Event period: 2023/01/16~2023/01/29

3. ์ค๊บพ๋ง (Joong-Ggeokk-Ma)
The slang iโd like to teach you today is ์ค๊บพ๋ง which stands for โ์ค์ํ ๊ฒ์ ๊บพ์ด์ง ์๋ ๋ง์โ This is a little advanced but let me try to break it down for you guys!
โค๏ธ โ์ค์ํ ๊ฒ์ โ (Joong-yo-han-geo-seun) means โWhatโs important is...โ โค๏ธ โ๊บพ์ด์ง ์๋โ (Ggeokk-e-ji ahn-nun) means unbreakable or not swayed โค๏ธ โ๋ง์โ (ma-eum) means heart!
Take the first character of each statement and you get ์ค๊บพ๋ง which translates to
โwhat's important is the unbroken heartโ and means โDonโt lose heart!โ This became popular from the world cup since Korea went up to the round 16 and unfortunately fell short to Brazil :( But it became popularized and now people say it a lot to encourage others or themselves!
Last but not least!!! Don't forget to check out this new short video that Yeji made to teach you the vowels in Korean :) Show her some support guys โค๏ธ
What do you want to hear about? ๐
Before ending this newsletter, I'd like to hear from you guys what you'd like to read about in these weekly newsletters!
