Welcome to Teuidaโs weekly newsletter: ๐ Since itโs the new year, I imagine there might be some people who are new, so Iโd just like to say: Welcome everyone to our Korean learning community! Iโm here to help you with whatever questions you have
+ teaching you some Korean cultural info and language every week!
Todayโs newsletter is going to be focused on โจKorean Entertainment Resources โจ!
So Iโve heard from the discord and a lot of Korean learners that one of the easiest ways to get better at Korean is by digesting Korean media. Not only will you be able to learn everyday phrases and words but u can also be entertained and have fun~
Iโll be doing a mini series on different forms of entertainment
but this newsletter is going to be focused on K-DRAMAS <3
I know a lot of you have requested this so โ your wish is my command hehe!
Letโs learn some Korean from some iconic dramas~ ๐
1. โ๊ทธ๋ฅ ์กฐ๊ธ ์ญ์ญํ ๋ฟ์ด์ผโ ๐
This phrase is from the ICONIC Itaewon Class! I would really recommend it to anyone just starting to watch K-dramas or honestly if you wanna learn some simple Korean! Letโs try breaking this phrase down ๐คฉ
๊ทธ๋ฅ (geu-nyang): Just
์กฐ๊ธ (jo-keum): a little
์ญ์ญํ (seob-seob-hal): upset or sad
๋ฟ์ด์ผ (bbun-e-ya): only
So these are what the individual words roughly translate to! This phrase means, Iโm just a little upset. The ๊ทธ๋ฅ and ๋ฟ์ด์ผ are serving generally the same purpose to say
โiโm just..โ or โiโm only..โ
Remember that ์ญ์ญํ is conjugated from ์ญ์ญํด (seob-seob-hae) which just means โIโm upset.โ Next time your Korean learning buddy misses one of your study calls or ignores your messages you can tell themโ์ญ์ญํด.โ ๐

1. โ์ผ, ์ ์ธ์ด?โ ๐ญ
Okay this is one of my FAVORITE scenes from 25, 21 because honestly itโs so funny. If you guys havenโt seen this drama then you have not experienced true heartbreak cuz MAN this one hit me in the feels. Anyways, letโs take a look at this phrase!
์ผ (ya): hey (informal)
์ (we): why
์ธ์ด (oo-ruh): cry
Pretty simple, right? I feel like most of you have probably already heard all of these individual words but when put together the phrase means โHey, why are you crying?โ The hey used in this context is really informal and can only be used with people youโre friends with or people younger than you who youโre friendly with!
Of course this is a very comical scene which is why he says โheyโ in such a shocked tone, but next time your friend is crying MAYBE omit the ์ผ from the sentence hehe.

1. โ์ด๋? ๊ด์ฐฎ์ง?โ ๐
Another classic and crowd favorite: โOur Beloved Summer.โ I recently rewatched this drama and cried and laughed in my room by myself heheโฆ I really recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh, or cry, or both! Anyways, this scene is between two friends, one is a chef at a bar and one is the customer. The chef hands the customer the food and asks her โ์ด๋? ๊ด์ฐฎ์ง?โ Letโs break it down.
์ด๋ (euh-ddae): how is it?
๊ด์ฐฎ์ง (kwen-chan-ji): good, right?
You might be wondering how those little phrases in Korean would translate so long in English but yeah, thatโs kind of how it works sometimes haha. Anyways, the first one is asking โhow is the food?โ and the second is saying โitโs good, right?โ
Remember that ๊ด์ฐฎ์ง is derived from ๊ด์ฐฎ์ (kwen-chan-ah) which means โItโs okay.โ Switching the last character makes it a question and begs for agreement or disagreement while the original form is just โitโs okay.โ This word (in context) can mean both โgoodโ or โokay.โ When it stands alone it means okay but in context, she's asking if the food is good! Hope that makes sense~!
