It’s a new week! Can you guys believe that January is already basically over?! I don’t know about you guys but this month really flew by for me! Teuida is back with our weekly newsletter and our LAST newsletter of the first month of the new year~

You guys loved learning phrases from K-dramas so this newsletter

will be focused on K-pop lyrics!! Let’s learn some useful + common

phrases from songs you guys know already!

P.S. I got a message about getting rid of the romanization on these newsletters and unfortunately, while some of you might be advanced learners, we still have a lot of beginners who need the romanization! 1. “예상했어 나” 🐰

OKAY where are my New Jeans fans at??? I love their new songs and specifically “OMG” has been stuck in my head for the past WEEK and I have no intention of getting it out tbh. This song is so good so make sure to listen to it if you haven’t already! 🎶 ~Oh my oh my God 예상했어 나~ I was really hoping that he will

come through~ 🎶

Okay, just like the K-drama phrases, let’s learn what this lyric means.

예상 (ye-sang): expectation
했어 (he-ssuh): I did/ I did it
나 (na): I / me

These are what all of the individual words translate to and the actual translation is pretty similar too! This phrase means “I expected this.” Since the action (했어) is added to the word 예상 it turns into expected instead of expectation! 나 can mean both I or me but in this context it is “I” because the person is talking about something they did.

1. “언제나 니 옆에 있을게” ❤️

Can you guys guess what song this is from?! It might be kind of hard because this is a really really common phrase when it comes to lyrics or even dramas tbh. BUTTT it is from NCT Dream’s Candy! This song is originally sung by H.O.T. the legends themselves but NCT did a remake that went viral everywhere this year! 🤑

Let’s learn what this phrase means and break it down~

언제나 (eon-jae-na): always
니 (nee): you/your
옆에 (yeop-eh): next to
있을게 (i-sseul-ge): will be

Can you put together these words and figure out what it means? (it’s pretty easy hehe)
If you guessed “I will always be by your side” ding ding ding you are correct! This phrase is something that you could tell your family member, your best friend, or even your special someone to assure them that you will always be by their side! Just a warning though the 니 (you/your) is really informal so make sure you’re using it properly!

1. “너라도 행복해줘” 🙇‍♂️

This one is one that not many of you might know but I had to sneak it in here just cuz it is one of my favorite artists. This song is “Beyond Love” by Big Naughty! Some of you KRNB & rap fans may know this artist already but this song was really popular in 2022 and still remains a huge fav of mine! 🤩

Let’s learn what this phrase means:

너라도 (neo-ra-do): at least you/ even you
행복 (heng-bok): happiness
해줘 (hae-jwo): do, be – this is a call to action and is kind of used as do it (for me)

This phrase can be translated directly to “at Least you be happy” but generally falls along the lines of “I want you to be happy.” To understand the phrase you have to realize that in the part before this, the lyrics were expressing how the singer is not happy but wants the person that the song is about, to be happy at least. (Even if he can’t be happy). So if you want a FULL translation it means: “Even if I can’t be–you should be happy.” Which I think is beautiful!
